Ever Feel Out Of Place?

Ah, the Mopar Nationals!! About this time every year, the baby boomers and a plethera of American Muscle Machines descend upon Columbus' Eastside for a glimpse of the best rides of their day and to show that the classics can still hand out the *** kicks! Okay, so the journalism is bad but what might have been worse was my wife and I taking a leisurely Saturday night drive in my respectably modified Honda Civic and ending up right in the midst of Mopar Madness!! The track is a good 15 minutes from where I live, but down the street is Brice Road, the Sunset Boulevard of the Mopar Show-Car cruise circuit. People line the streets and watch and marvel at all the musclecar mayhem. The Cudahs, the Road Runners, the Challengers and the Chargers sporting nothing less than an R/T emblem all cruising and spinning wherever they wanted. And then there was me. Be it by accident, I couldn't help but wonder if those peeps thought I was thinkin' I could hang by crashing the American Autofest with my Import Intruder!! But to my surprise, the haters stayed at home. Hell, I even caught some nods. But I minded my business and even showed enthusiasm for some of the nicest domestics I have ever seen in one place. For, had I been born in '57 instead of '77, I may have still been cruising that strip last night, just in a completely different automobile surrounded by a completely different vibe and subculture of people but with the same respect and enthusiasm for something we all have in common.

yeah it makes me feel weird when I 'm walking out of the mall and hop into my car, while groups of other people around my age are waiting for their moms and hop into their minivans.

I can see it in their eyes. the worst part is that most of them probably think
a) i'm spoiled/parents bought my car
b) I'm a showoff
c) they deserve a car more than I do

someday I'd like to burst their bubbles and tell them out of a bullhorn, maybe if they were working instead of loitering they could afford a car.

I got used to feeling out of place since most import owners around here are complete idiots. Too many times have i heard "I got 30 hp from my intake". SOOO most of my friends are V8 owners and here i am with a civic. One has a GT 350 replica with a 351 (side pipes OWN), another has a turbo 01 GT. The only import owner im friends with had a B18C1 in a civic hatch.

But the first time i went to the track i was the only import running. The only other imports there were an accord and a celica in the parking lot. I looked funny as hell cause id do a burnout that was on par with the pro mod class burnouts, then id run an 18.3 @ 76 most of the muscle car guys got a real kick out of it one guy said he didn't know hondas could burnout but was impressed with mine. My friends told me they thought i couldn't spin the tires much less do a burnout.

If you want out of place, try parking a grand prix with missing side body molding in a grocery store parking lot in Amelia Island (home for really rich folks in Florida) and having a Lotus and Rolls Royce park next to you. They looked at me and I was like "Uh...hello my friend!"
