I have always been under the assumption and understanding that Honda civics offer a great value because of their reliability and how well they retain their values over the years. What I don't understand is why they only earn a 3/5 for reliability on various websites. Now this data is available for the "older models" with 2018 also earning 3/5. We cannot predict how reliable the 2019s are yet. Does edmunds, usnews, and other outlets all get their valuation of the reliability based on what JD power thinks? Why does JD power value Honda's reliability so low?
Now I understand that "average" reliability nowadays is still amazing and that an over average reliability is virtually indestructible, and that honor seems to be bestowed to Toyotas only as far as I can see.
If I buy a Honda and only plan to keep it for 5-7 years (~50-60K miles), how much more reliability units does a Toyota give me over the same period of time? Same question goes to a mazda or a kia or any other car make.

Re: JD power
JD Power gave the Chevy Sonic a glowing review for its road test and performance. That should inform you of the credibility of JD Power.
There are a couple users on here with 10th gen civics that don't seem to have any concerns.
As for reliability compared to other manufacturers, it all depends on how you maintain it over that period of time, but obviously some manufacturers are better than others. Toyota may be more reliable, but they're boring. Honda is still very reliable but has fun cars in the lineup, Mazda is sort of similar to Honda (I'd guess similar reliability, but no manuals so not as fun to me at least). I just have a bias against Kia and Hyundai (I'll never own one despite the overwhelming evidence that they're much better cars than they used to be).
