Big drop in mpg with new tires

Got new tires after OEM tires on 2017 Civic Hatchback had to be replaced. My hwy mpg dropped From 40 to barely 30. Dealer and Costco “experts” were no help: “That can happen,” they say. How and why it happens and what can be done about, they don’t say. It’s unacceptable to lose 20 percent or more efficiency. Anyone else have this problem?

Re: Big drop in mpg with new tires

I would be surprised if the tires made that much of a difference. I could see 1-2 MPG, but 10...

Re: Big drop in mpg with new tires

That sound way off, unless there is a big difference in tire size... maybe a mpg or 2 at most.
Newer cars come with low rolling resistance tires to help with fuel efficiency.. New tires have a higher rolling resistance that the same tire with same tire pressure as the tires wear. The expected loss is 2% to 4% in mpg difference with new tires of the same brand, model, and size.
