If you mean as far as being able to listen for when to shift, I never use the tach. Its not really necessary, and my daily driver is an auto. So even someone who's fairly inexpierenced should be able to listen. I just don't understand why people with autosticks or tiptronic or whatever you call it think they need monster tachs with shiftlights. I think thats stupid.

No tach? Nah, I use them. I can shift by only listening to the sound, but I can only do it rather accurately when I shift normally. When I need to shift right before the fuel cut off point I look at the tach. If you can do that and you have a manual, then you're pretty good.
From a DX owner: You need them if you ever want to get indiglo guages (someone please prove me wrong). And don't tell me to get a new guage cluster.

I never understood why people with ex's get aftermarket tachs too. Someone said they think it looks cool but how they heck does having two tachs look cool? I think it looks tachy (no pun intended)

I use my tach for mainly for monitoring the idle, and to gauge performance. For me I like to know what my rpms are at any given speed that I'm cruising at. So nah you dont need a tach, but its good to know how the engine is behaving.. atleast for me it is.

And can someone please explain to me why the guy rocking the '73 Duster has his gauges on the outside of the car infront of the windshield? Looks like ***.
Well my 1988 DX civic doesn't have one and I really wish it did, I go by the tach a lot on my new one. I shift around 3 on mine when I am in town, or I like to know when I hit around 6 when I am trying to get away from people trying to rear end me at stop lights hehe

it would stop working if your car surpasses the redline of the stock engine....
