2001 Civic Air Filter trouble

Hello,
I recently purchased a Honda Civic 2001 ex and needed to replace a air filter. However the filters that you find on your typical store do not fit the air box. I am looking for options. To elaborate a bit more: the reason why it does not fit it is because the rubber trim around the air filter has a square rubber seal around the screw spot and that is off enough that the air filter does not fit. Any help greatly appreciated.
For reference I purchased a Fram CA8911 air filter and have also tried the STP SP8911.

Thanks again

(random google pic)

Are you talking about the one screw in the middle of the housing?
Flip the filter over? IDK, I can't see what you are dealing with. Got pics?
Trim it? Squish the seal to the side a bit?

Dealership surely will sell you a filter that fits correctly.

Yes that is exactly what I am talking about. I was hoping for a cheaper alternative then going to the dealership. But if that is my only recourse then it is what it is.

Re: 2001 Civic Air Filter trouble

So I went and got the Honda part and it still didn't fit. I tried the STP filter still had an issue. Is there a case where the air box is from another Honda? on the box it says HONDA PP-TD40 CC6

Re: 2001 Civic Air Filter trouble

My 05 did not utilize those metal clips to latch down the top cover....it had captive screws in the top cover.

This is 01-05 cover....with threaded inserts.

Re: 2001 Civic Air Filter trouble

My airbox has clips, every video I have seen so far shows the air box with screws. Not sure what to make of it. My engine has blue writing on it, and it says Oil in German and also Oil in English. I am not sure if that matters. But I included the pictures for reference. I guess I am not sure where to go from here. The car needs an air filter LOL

Where I circled in red shows the engine number, What does it say?
Did someone swap the engine in your car?
Do you live in North America? Or in Europe?

You can also buy an aftermarket air intake and filter and be like all the cool kids

Re: 2001 Civic Air Filter trouble

So a D15B?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_D_engine#D15B_VTEC

I don't think that ever came in a North American Civic. Previous Owner must have had the engine swapped with one purchased from an importer. Engine runs good? No check engine light?

Is there a place in your city that imports JDM car parts? They might be able to help you find a filter. Or you could get a normal 01-05 air box from the junkyard but if you live in the rust belt than the screws are probably junk and wont keep the air box sealed. Or buy an aftermarket air intake and filter. You can usually find them used for cheap

Definitely a swap, D15B engine and that filter housing didn't come in that car from the factory.
If the car is a 01-05 LX or EX its Engine should have been a D17A1 or A2

Here's what wiki says about D15B
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_D_engine#D15B

You might check on getting a stock D17A1/D17A2 filter housing from the boneyard (I can't say if it will actually fit) or getting a CAI like the cool kids

Re: 2001 Civic Air Filter trouble

Engine runs good, but when I force fit that air filter it doesn't. There is a JDM near me (Chicago) so I am assuming that is where they went to get the motor. It passed emissions. Anything you can share about the engine ? are they bad should I be worried ?

Re: 2001 Civic Air Filter trouble

As long as its runs and drives fine, and passes emissions (which makes Captain Planet happy) then I wouldn't worry about it. Just might make finding certain parts harder. As you've already discovered.
