Legitimate Short Ram Intake?

Just lookin for a new sound coming from my 2001 civic LX sedan and I looked a bit into intakes. I narrowed it down to a short ram and I found this AEM short ram intake and was wondering if it was legitimate and if the website is a credible site.

http://www.procivic.com/pages-produc...226/index.html

Thanks for any input.

Re: Legitimate Short Ram Intake?

Never heard of them, but if they take paypal you don't have much to worry about. 130 is pretty good for an AEM.

Re: Legitimate Short Ram Intake?

Just my two cents here. I went to my local muffler shop and paid a guy to bend a 2 1/2 chunk of pipe to 90 degrees. 10 bucks. bought a cheapo cone filter. 19 bucks. found a peice of 2 1/2 inch hose for a bushing. (free) and bought a 3 inch hose connector 10 bucks. drilled a hole for my air sensor. not sure if it's MAP or MAF. anyway, I looked at the AEM kit. looks like a filter on a tube with a couple of grommets. I built it and it seems to work nice. Just a short ram intake but it's something. will post pics soon. On another note... I"m thinking of getting rid of all that tubing and just throwing my filter on the end of the throttle body and making a bung for the sensor. cutting a hole in the hood and making a real ram air intake, any thoughts...?

The issue with your $19 filter is that it's does a terrible job at... filtering. Check your oil, it may very well have a bit of sediment in it.

As far as cutting a hole in your hood, go for it, but you won't gain any power if that's the goal and you'll have a very hard time keeping the filter clean.

The best intake is the K&N FIPK, proven on the dyno by members back in the day.

Re: Legitimate Short Ram Intake?

I have done research on the K&N FIPK, but at 250 bucks, its a bit out of my range. I'm looking at around 150 as my max. Dont know if this is the best for my money or not.

Re: Legitimate Short Ram Intake?

Buy a cheap ebay pipe and an AEM Dryflow filter and your set.. And youve spent less than 150. However, the AEM you listed above is a great price hopefully not a scam.

Re: Legitimate Short Ram Intake?

MindBomber. Thanks for the feedback!, i'll check my oil for grimeys next time i drop it. I drop every 5000 km regardless and run amsoil full synth. One of the joys of being a parts person is that I get all the good stuff on the cheap. i.e. 6.99 per litre full synth. I don't think there will be much power gain with the hood scoop. but Pontiac sold ram air forever... But hey it's worth a try.

Re: Legitimate Short Ram Intake?

So crap!!! I took a couple of snaps of my intake kit (homebuilt kit that is) then deleted it off my phone to make room for warranty pictures on my phone. oh well. I've been thinking more about cutting my hood, and i'm still all for it. I think i'm going to build the scoop with cowl induction in mind. I'm not too worried about keeping the filter clean as I'm putting serious thought into building a new filter housing and using a larger filter.I might even just make the scoop face forward or if i'm real creative make it turnable so i can change the scoop as i feel necessary. I am a true nerd and embrace it. All highway miles... gotta love the clean prairie air in Saskatchewan... Even if I just drill a big hole just left of center of the hood, i can make my scoop so that i can rotate it as my mood changes. I'm more about function than form.

gotcha, during winter (80% of the year), the dust simply freezes over and falls to the ground, so filtering is not an issue

Re: Legitimate Short Ram Intake?

HAte to thread jack, but one little add on question...

I haven't heard much about the Injen SRI. And I haven't seen any reviews on them either. Curious if anyone has any input on them? For me, it comes down to the Injen, or this same AEM, due to cost. Not looking for pure perfomance, but looks and a little better engine bay room.

Re: Legitimate Short Ram Intake?

Well. I just installed my megan race header. O2 cheater. And Ive measured for my hood scoop. So the plan is to make my hole with a (you guessed it... Hole saw) from the bottom. Use some of that nice rubber lining from some fender flares. Then I can start the scoop sizing process. Even if i dont have a scoop. The filter will have a breath of fresh air. Will probably sound cool too!

Re: Legitimate Short Ram Intake?

Okay. Got my short ram intake. This thing sings at 4000 rpm. Since I didnt add a bung for the pcv valve. I added a breather to the crank case. Yes this is a ghetto setup. But I hate paying for something that I know I can build. My next step will be to shorten this intake drastically but putting filter directly on the throttle body and making my hood scoop. wish me luck?

Re: Legitimate Short Ram Intake?

I'm really pleased with my AEM Short Ram. Picked it up for only $70 direct from an AEM salesperson who used the kit for demonstration at trades shows. Amazingly it was in absolutely perfect condition; new dry flow filter included!
Adds a nice whistle and improves appearance of the engine bay. Don't expect any drastic performance gains. I also noticed my exhaust tone (I also have Spec-D) got much deeper and throatier sounding.

Haven't heard much about the Injen SRI, but it looks legit. And I've been told to shy away from cheaper K&Ns once before, and to only go for the pricey K&N.

Re: Legitimate Short Ram Intake?

besides the filter itself that comes with the intake what makes the piping of a name brand intake better than my ebay one? im aware the filter is made of cheap microfiber and all but is there any difference in the piping?

Nothing really, maybe just higher quality material. It's just a mandrel bent elbow with holes in it. A lot of people buy cheap ebay or auto store intakes just for the piping and buy better filters. Also as demonstrated below, you can build your own.
