well if i do the overhaul kit, and maybe the filter and cooler, do i need anything else to keep the tranny from breaking? (my friend had problems with his volkswagon auto from driving it hard after a few years, but he got that fixed because he was under warranty) So is there a chance that the overhaul kit can cause problems later on with the tranny?

No changing the clutches (doing the TCI overhaul) wont hurt the trans in the long run. What can hurt it is messing with the valve body and driving like a crazy person all the time. Doing what you said should be good for the trans to last a really long time.
