Auto Transmission
does anyone know what I should do to improve my auto transmission??
Ive heard of auto transmission controllers, auto trans. coolers, and torque converters (i think thats what their called). Anyone what parts I need to go with these parts and things along the lines of re-building the transmission to handle a controller?
Im just a little bit lost here

Rep Power: 0 you can mikronite the trans. internals don't know how good it would be in a AT. i know they've done it on a types tranny with 10hp gain, lower trans oil tempertures, reduce grinding, and better high rpm shifts and suppose to last longer

what does mikroniting the trans do? and how much is that?
how did they get 10 hp out of it??
I guess I would want both, but I mainly just want to somehow improve transmission for better power and shifting...to get more out of it and be faster w/out having to get a manual.
But I dont want to get some extra parts to get more power if its going to break my transmission after driving it hard!..thats why I would need to "build it to handle more power" i would guess?

What are you going to improve it for? longevity or to handle performance?

Rep Power: 276 This is the overhaul kit. It makes the trans shift much quicker and not feel like a slushbox anymore.
http://www.lonestarracing.com/cgi-bi...CI-559100.html These guys are fast and have it for the lowest price.
along with the overhaul I installed a remote filter for the trans using a ford v8 filter and I installed a B&M oil cooler for it also. These 2 where just for extra safty because my gf and I both drive the car hard. tup:

Rep Power: 302 would it be better to just get amanual? i have an auto too, and i want the power, but i want a better feel! so i think in tax return time... ill get a manual, or just save till that time and swap!

yeah, idk... i think it would be cheaper just to fix up a crappy auto and then full out change it to manual ya kno? I mean dont get me wrong I so so wish I had a manual, but getting a thing or 2 to make the auto shift better might have almost the same result as manual.

Rep Power: 296 its not really worth the cost of building up an auto tranny unless your doing the work yourself. You will get raped on labor charges and come close to either doing a auto to manual swap or a k20a3 swap with little more money. Just drive the car until you can afford a faster car down the line. If you really want to build it up, i would upgrade the torque converter to a level 10 one. You can do a search and find links

actually i just came up with a better idea altogether!
Im under warranty, so ill just drive down the street to Honda, and keep shifting D2 to D3 to D and to reverse while flooring it! haha, then ill pull into the parking lot going maybe say 40 and through it into Park. Then Maybe I Can Get A NEW MANUAL TRANSMISSION for free!

Rep Power: 296 honestly i wouldnt mess with the tranny if your under warranty, especially if your not mechanically inclined. If you do a search i think gearbox did a whole thread on this awhile back. Basically in autos, the torque converter puts the power to ground from tranny and does the shifts for the transmission. When you upgrade the torque converter,it feels like you have a little more power because you can get off the line a little quicker and shifts are smoother. It makes the engine more efficent with the hp you have. The returns usually isn't worth the cost if you add labor costs from a shop. You dyno around 80whp since your a lx and maybe get around 82whp with the upgrade.

Rep Power: 276 the torque converter is the fluid INTERFACE between the engine and tranny. It does NOT put power to the ground. The final drive ring & pinion gears and differential are what put the power down... the main benefit of a high stall torque converter is that you can launch at a higher RPM and more in the engines power band then with a stock one. Stock stall speed is around 2700 RPM's and aftermarket ones can be found that stall at 3200 - 3500 RPM's

are the torque converters universal fit?
Well it doesnt sound like much..but wat if i got the torque converter + the overhaul kit + a tranny cooler? Then would that produce a pretty good difference in acceleration and shifting? Or would it be better to just get headers and a SAFC2?

Rep Power: 276 well let me put it this way... You get nothing from a header and SAFC (well maybe 1-2whp) at least with a good trans your car will drive better and be more fun... and no the torque converters aernt universal you have to either call TCI auto or level10. If your not boosted I wouldnt even worry about the torque converter tho cause its not gonna make that much difference. The biggest thing is the trans overhaul. I will see if I can take a vid of my GF's car so you guys can see how the trans with a TCI overhaul shifts. Someone PM me if they can host it. Its really not that hard to do the work on the trans yourself as long as you dont mind having a bit of downtime maybe 2-3 days for your first time.

alright thanks a lot for the help
I thought that getting DC sport headers + a high flow cat from random technology welded to my magnaflow exhaust and then getting a SAFC2 would give like at least 5 or so? I mean with all the other bolt-ons that I have on now..

Rep Power: 304 lol, for an overhaul kit installed???? try more like $400++++++++++ And a guess of 6-10 hours with R&R of the trans by someone who knows WTF they are doing. And doing this would be pretty much pointless unless you were boosted/spraying

Rep Power: 276 The 04-05 trannies work in all years. I have no idea what they changed to make them better. Most shops will charge you about $1500 for the labor on the trans. This is why I did it myself with the help of my OEM service manual. My total cost for the overhaul, filter, cooler, and new fluid was under $400 with me doing the labor.
