Question Are Air intakes worth it ?

Hi guys, I was thinking about replaceing my stock air intake with an aftermarket one that i see on ebay all the time but I had some questions

1 - Whats it soposed to do ? just cool the car engine better and add some hp ?
2 - Do I need to replace the filter often ?
3 - Do I need to buy any extra parts other then the air intake ?
4 - Are there different types of air intakes ? which is best ?
5 - Does it sound better then the stock intake ?
6 - Is it really worth the trouble replaceing the stock intake ?

1. the intake just sucks in more air resulting in getting more power.
2. you dont really have to replace the filter. you could if you wanted to. you can just buy a filter cleaner and clean the filter up.
3. if you buy a intake it should come with all the neccesary parts to install it.
4. there are different brands of intakes. i wouldnt really suggest on buying those cheap-o ebay intakes. look into getting AEM, injen, weapon R or k&n typhoon.
5. i think it does sound better then stock intakes.
6. installing an intake is a breeze. just probably take up to 20-30 minutes of your time. not even that maybe.

just to let you know, any bolt ons dont really do much to our motor. most people here will tell you to save up for a turbo kit or k20 swap.

i say just go the ebay one. all intakes is just a pipe with a filter on the end =/, if anything you can buy the ebay intake with a nice filter. they dont do much for our motor anyways. ebay = 50 bucks tops, brand name intake = 200~? i would spend the 50 bucks considering intakes really dont do much to our cars anyways. with brand name you cant go wrong but i dont think its really worth it for our d17s. if you really looking for some major power look into nitrous, turbo or swap. just my 2cents

My short and sweet... They do nothing for a d17, the only one worth a damb is a K&N. up to a 5hp gain if that. Save money buy turbo

as you can tell already, it's mixed opinions about this. Buy one if you like, it doesnt hurt to get 1 unless youre on very strict budget. I would also have to advice to stay away from ebay intakes as they tend to not fit too well and break in long run, and not CARB legal(if you live in CA and cops care about these things).

Not sure with the 7th gens, the only type of intake that would cause that would be a Cold-air. Short rams need nothing but the removal of your sotck airbox and resonator. I would say don't bother with the cold-air but that's just my opinion.

I loved the way it sounded, until it broke. Now i am back with OEM and for daily driving its better to stay with OEM.
The intake makes the car less responsive from idlt - about 3500 rpm. After that it's faster by a tad, but in the lower rpm range an intake sucks

I've also heard intakes increase mileage, not sure how true that is however If they do, the intake will pay for itself over time

1 - Whats it soposed to do ? just cool the car engine better and add some hp ? not be as restrictive and allow more air into the throttle body, very few hp
2 - Do I need to replace the filter often ?clean it not replace it
3 - Do I need to buy any extra parts other then the air intake ?if it is from someone like aem or k&N then no, but buyer beware of ebay
4 - Are there different types of air intakes ? which is best ?yes , some say K&N typhoon or weapon R
5 - Does it sound better then the stock intake ?better is objective word, they make noise yes
6 - Is it really worth the trouble replaceing the stock intake ?its not trouble replacing it like 30 min, but can you deal with higher gas prices and lower mpg?
