New Short Shifter For The 01+ Civic and RSX

Hey guys i'm from clubrsx and I have been using the Viscous Tech short shifter for a little bit now. I just wanted to share my review on this product. Also the side arm installation of this product is much easier now because it has had a little design change. From what I understand this product fits both the Civic and the RSX. Pictures are below. Their website also has alot of pictures and they are all on the civic shifter assembly. I have confirmed this with Jon from VT. I hope this helps.

Please keep in mind that the following review is based on my rsx. You might need to take off the center console in your civic.

Viscous Technologies Short Shifter Kit

For everyone looking for a short shifter, there is a new one on the market. This is also a 2 piece set just like the Comptech. The great thing about this product is the pricing, its 65 bucks to get the fore arm and the side arm adapters but that includes shipping. You also have the choice to purchase either adapter if you want to buy them separately. The fore arm adapter goes for 40 bucks shipped. The side arm is currently out of stock until February.

Introduction
I have had the REVO short shifter for well over a year and a half. The only reason I bought this was because it was the only short shifter on the market at the time. I really liked it at first however over time I realized that it was just crappy because of the quality and how much of a reduction in shifting it provided. I feel like REVO could have done a much better job if they had taking their time to figure things out a bit more. For example the REVO shifter reduces the throws however it’s not very noticeable especially in 1-2 and 5-6. In 3-4 you can really tell that it’s a shorter throw. Another thing myself and others have noticed is that the REVO has so much side to side play. This is something that has always bothered me but there was nothing I could do about it until now. Lastly a lot of people have had problems with the welds coming off. Some people have had it re-welded and some have gone through the process of obtaining a replacement.

Installation
This is by far much easier to install then the REVO because you do not need to take off the center console. You just need to take off the cover on top of the center console and take off your shift ****. The best part is that you DO NOT need to drill into your stock shifter assembly in order to install this piece unlike Comptech’s.

Adjustability

This short shifter kit has multiple adjustments to pick from. The forearm lets you pick from 3 settings: 10%, 20% and 28%. Even though these settings don’t seem that high trust me they are very accurate. Viscous Tech has done a comparison with the Neuspeed short shifter kit and even though Neuspeed claims their adapter reduces shifting by 30%, in reality it only reduces it by 13%. The side arm adapter reduces side to side play by either 25% or 33%.

Throws
I have the forearm adjustability set to the highest setting which is 28% and the sidearm set to 25%. At first I was very skeptical because I am one of those people who believes adapters wont make too much of a difference but I have been proven wrong. You can feel shorter throws in every single gear, all the way from 1st to 6th. The gears are so much closer. The stock assembly is so sturdy now compared to before and compared to my old REVO. So far twice I have made the mistake for putting my car into third instead of 1st when taking off. When the gear is in first it looks like it’s in 3rd and when it’s in 5th it still looks like it’s in 3rd. There is also ALMOST NO side to side play anymore. If you try to just move the shifter side to side in neutral it moves like 1/8 of an inch on each side if not less.

Quality
The quality of these pieces seems to be very durable. Although I have not had the adapters on for too long, the adapter definitely feels strong and according to Viscous Tech it is CNC machined using aircraft grade 6061 Aluminum. It is also anodized black to provide protection against corrosion.

Warranty
This company also offers a lifetime part failure warranty for the products they make.

Conclusion
Overall I think I have made the right decision in picking up this kit. One thing I would suggest is that people who still have the stock shifter assembly in their car and are looking for a short shifter; this is the one to go with. Installation is a breeze and you will definitely love the shifting, not to mention the price is very competitive to the others on the market. I am very big into Comptech parts however I would pick this piece over theirs simply because you do not need to drill into the stock assembly. Also other manufacturer(s) claim their short shift kit reduces shifting by 30 percent even though it does not (13 percent for Neuspeed). I know 28% does not seem like much but trust me guys this definitely is better then the REVO. I have not compared this piece to the Comptech Piece directly or the Neuspeed Piece but I will be purchasing both pieces to do a comparison and will post up a review later on.

If anyone is interested this is the thread I created at clubrsx.com

Sorry guys I don’t have the greatest camera but here are some pictures:

Here is the new side arm adapter.

I AM IN NO WAY OR FORM ATTACHED TO THIS COMPANY. JUST WANTED TO PROVIDE MY FEEDBACK ON THE PRODUCT.

Hmm, good point. I do not have an civic but am just trying to help get the word out to the civic community. I have no idea how the center console on a civic is but i'll go with what you say. I need to edit my post stating that this review was done on an rsx.

Please do share your review after your purchase. That way you guys can have a review on the civic instead of the rsx.

Dosen't look too bad, but you'd still have the stock shifter height, and IMO the stock shifter is waaaaaay to high. I feel more satisfied with my revo--> 1.25" shorter than stock and 30+% shorter shifter throw vs stock hight and 28% less throw.
