97 civic hx brake light sensor

97 civic hx brake light sensor
I got the car a week ago no motor. Charged up the battery, then relised the brake lights were staying on without keys in ignition and doors shut thought it may be the sensor stopper so looked under the dash and the stopper and sensor were about an inch off. The car was an auto to manual swap. Any ideas ??
(Sensor dose not line up with stop off by an inch or two)
