Intro and question for a 93 Civic Ex

Hi,

Longtime gearhead, new Honda (car) owner here. I just picked up a basked case 1993 Civic EX coupe. There's a tiny amount of rust and some side swipe damage on the right rear but otherwise it's a rust free, major accident free body. It was parked when it burnt a valve. I got it from a family member, first for $500 when the head was supposedly rebuilt, he just had to get it from his father who was supposed to take it to the shop. Price when to free when it came back untouched with a burnt valve.

I found a 95k mile 95 Civic D16Z6 engine to swap for a decent price and mainly I'm looking to find out what I should do before swinging the engine into the car. The 93 uses the same engine, but is an auto where the donor is a manual, so I know I'll need to swap the flexplate on and I also notice the TB is a little different. I can't see any obvious other changes so I figured I'd ask.

I'm thinking timing belt, water pump, valve cover gasket and VTECH gasket because the yard, or someone, clipped the wire to the donor VTECH solenoid. The original looks good. I'm also thinking motor mounts. The original engine just had a tuneup so I'm probably going to use that stuff for now, plus it's easy to change later. I'm looking for the harder to change stuff.

Right now the car is going to be an economical commuter but what I really want to do is 5-spd swap it and put a turbo on it. Just because...

Let me know if there's anything I should look at or do while the engine is out that's not obvious.

Thanks,
David

Re: Intro and question for a 93 Civic Ex

Oh, one more question. Can I split the engine / trans in the car and take it out that way or should I just pull the trans? Last FWD swap I did was pulling a 2.5 SOHC out of an old Dodge Shadow and replacing it with a 2.4 DOHC out of a Sebring. Turbo, big injectors, Megasquirt, etc... It should have equaled 425hp but I ended up ripping two pistons apart because the ring gaps pinched... That was about 15 years ago...

Off the top of my head it should just be the flexplate and the throttle body. Haven't owned a 5th gen but they're very similar to 6th gens. Starter is different between manual and auto but you already have the one you need.
I would pull the engine and trans as a unit.
