1990 Civic DX 1.5L.

Symptom is that when idling it almost dies sometimes.
Engine idle goes up and down.

I've did the bulletin on rewiring the ground. No help.

Recently when it almost dies, I get code 17. This is VSS code.

Speedometer works.
I pulled the cluster and swapped the sensor on the speedometer.
No help.

Any ideas? Thanks kevin

Fix the stalling problem and see if the cel still is around

Thanks GP, but that article is way too general to be of any help.

I have new symptoms. Every time I shut the car off the CEL resets on the cluster. The car idles poorly until the CEL is tripped and then it idles fine.

I think there must be 2 different circuits/circumstances/inputs that control the idle. For a while now I've been able to hear the idle stumble a bit as it changes from one set of controls to the other.

I think, that for some reason it's getting stuck while its switching from one control to the next.

I need to find out why after the CEL cpmes on it idles fine, but not before.

I also need to find out what different controls there are for the idle.
