95 Coupe Idle Issue

How's it. I have a 95 Coupe and it's idling crazy. Occasionally, it'll start to fluctuate. It'll go up to around 1500-2000 and then back down to 500-1000. It doesn't always happen. It normally starts after a few minutes of driving. I don't drive hard or anything. Just trying to keep this running until I can swap it out. Thanks.

Re: 95 Coupe Idle Issue

Try removing, disassembling and cleaning the IACV with brake cleaner.

If that doesn't do the trick, remove the throttle body, take off the Fast Idle Valve, disassemble it and clean it thoroughly with brake cleaner (be careful with the rubber o-rings, a couple of them are odd shaped and probably brittle from age, so if you tear them you're off to find a new FIV most likely). Then thoroughly clean the throttle body itself with some carb cleaner, a shop towel, an old toothbrush and some pipe cleaners. Put it all back together and use a new throttle body gasket (duh).

If it's still acting up, double check your mechanical timing and ignition timing.

If those are fine, run the idle adjustment procedure. When you do the idle adjustment, while the engine is still cold and you've got it warming up to operating temperature (but NOT when the engine is hot) that would be a good time to also poke around the hoses with some propane, carb cleaner or starting fluid and see if there are vacuum leaks. If there are, repair the vacuum leak, obviously.

If none of those things do the trick, you might need to start looking for a new IACV and/or FIV.
