speedometer and tach way off HELP!

i just bought a 92 civic and it had an after maret tach in it. and when i was driving it home i noticed the speedometer and the tach were both working, not jumping or bouncing or acting weird except the tach wouldnt go past 2500 rpms when i know it was reved way higher then that and the speedometer was way off saying i was doing 120 when i was doing about 60. the milage counter and all the other instruments work fine on it still and i looked to see if the tach was installed right and it was. i cant figure out why the two are way off though. i know on my other civic the speedo wasnt working at all and had to replace to vss. could it be the same problem or what? please help

Speedo is bad,

and (a guess) the tach is sticking. This is probably why someone had an aftermarket tach in it.....
Rev up the engine and bang on top of the dash over the cluster with your fist, see if the tach needle goes higher.

well it doesn't have a tach in the cluster at all thats why theres an aftermarket tach.

Oh, I thought you meant it had an extra tach. It could just be set to the wrong engine type for all I know. If it was set to 8 cylinder, it would read half of what your 4 cylinder engine is really doing.

You can buy JUST the speedometer.

Start at the beginning and pick out your own car, I just guessed.

Junkyard?

Look for the manufacturers website and look for instructions there. Probably need to open it up to find out.

Speedo is not universal, I see 4 or 5 different part numbers in the factory catalog.
