Circle Track Mini Stock - B18b swap - limp mode?

Greetings everyone!

I'm way new here and new to Honda's, so please forgive me if I use the wrong terminology.

I have a 92 honda civic with a B18b swap in it (dohc, non-vtech) from a 95 Integra

Anyway, I am one of the fastest cars in the field, but I have one major problem. I can run for several laps and be the fastest car out there, and after a handful of laps, my car suddenly looses power. I've had several people tell me that it is going into "limp mode".

What happens is, suddenly the engine goes to idle while I'm racing. I'll be at full throttle accelerating down the strait, then it goes to idle. It'll sit there for a second or two, then rev up, then go back to idle, rev up, idle, rev, idle, all the while my foot is to the floor board. It'll do that several times well over a lap, almost two full laps (20-30 seconds), then it'll be fine for several laps. Then, it'll do it again. In a 35 lap main, It'll happen 2-3 times. I'll go from a 15.39 second lap, to a 20 second lap instantly. Then, I'm back to a 15 second lap.

Does anyone know what's going on? Or what I can do to fix this? Any help will be VERY appreciated.

-Donovan

Limp mode is something that the ECU will do to try and protect your engine if it finds a severe enough fault, thus hopefully allowing you to get it to a shop and get it fixed with ought doing catastrophic damage, but its hard to say if youre actually in Limp mode.

I found this from another civic forum. this might answer your question

I am having this exact issue, it happens coming out of a corner and pedal to the floor the car stays in idle for 2-3 seconds then picks back up again. Otherwise I’m the fastest car on the track but the “limp mode” if that’s what you want to call it limits me. I ordered a new ecu already but haven’t received it yet and tried it so i was wondering if anyone’s got the answer for what’s causing this issue? I run a 95 Integra ls with b18b1

Cornering only? that's odd.

First thought would be traction related. Or lsd.

Possibly if you're low on oil the oil pressure sensor, or vtec system (of that engine has it) could trigger limp mode while cornering; due to the oil sloshing away from the pump.

If its while accelerating on straights as well, I'd monitor the temperature sensor.

I thought it could possibly be transmission fluid sloshing and the pick up not doing its job until the fluid comes back to a semi flat surface so I added a half quart extra fluid, I could try doing the same with oil to make sure the pick up can get it with the body roll through the corners. It hasn’t done it on a straight away or anything it always happens when trying to get back on it through a corner. I’ll post an update after my next race if anything fixes it. Thanks for the input!

Pickup? You're not racing an auto are you? Lol

If so theres your issue, an auto will automatically shift in a corner, so you'll loose time.
