I'll say, this your tenacious. If you allow yourself time to learn, like the rest of us, you'll end up being really car smart. Welcome to the club, it's how we all learned.
You'll get this figured out eventually. He was right it may be a process of elimination to get this fully resolved.
Similar issue with my 85 civic. My mistake has been to not keep a written log each day. That'd be a huge help in remembering.
