Grinding noise - 94 civic
When downshifting into 1st, 2nd, or 3rd gear is when you can hear it most.
You can also hear it when letting off the gas in these gears.

I have a video of what it sounds like, first i downshift from 3rd to 2nd at 25mph then a few seconds later i let off the gas in 2nd gear.

jack up the front of the car, check wheel bearings. it would make sense that under acceleration you wouldn't hear them humming.
