Not getting the best gas mileage and wondering why

Ok so my 95 civic with a D16Z6 gets about 140 miles on half a tnak of gas and it seems a little low to me considering i hear about people pulling almost 200 miles on half a tank... what do you think the problem might be?

BTW: mostly highway driving at 65 mph, shift at around 3200rpm

I wouldn't go by fuel gauges, as they can easily vary if you're on a hill, going around corners, etc. Instead, fill up every week and calculate your MPG that way. As for tips, tune up helps some(that includes the fuel filter!!!), keep your tires properly inflated, take any crap you don't use out of your car. Excess weight will kill your mpg if you aren't careful. Your shifting points seem to be okay, so nothing to say about that. You may be able to bring it down to 3k or maybe 2700, but you may not get the power you need and can be counterproductive. If possible, coast to red lights and anticipate them. Needlessly slamming on your brakes can reduce fuel economy. I hope that helps some.

Yeah I heard having any weight in the trunk in a Honda kills MPG. Shift to neutral on any downhill spots! Haha

Actually, leaving it in gear is more beneficial because the car requires a small amount of fuel to keep the car running in neutral. The injectors are shut off while you're coasting, or something like that. I always forget exactly how it works.

yeah, calculating MPG helps more than saying how many TPM (Tank per mile), since tanks can have diff capacity...
and the fuel shuts when downhill and geared and throttle off. not sure if engine will be cold in long downhill :P
