setting timing on 1.5l

I have a 95 civic with a 1.5 liter engine and upon purchasing it I notice that the distributor is jimmy-rigged. The timing wasn't set right and they had to retard/advance the distributor past the slots for the bolts to hold the distributor in the head. Using the cup off a rear wheel drive shaft U-Joint and the bolt is how the distributor is held in place. On the crank there are four marks. I I I I something like that. what mark do I go by there and what do I use on the cam. please help.
