Exclamation 93 Civic DX engine idling up and down with AC on

I just replaced the ac compressor, the drier, all the freon, and it is still idling up and down when I turn the ac on. If the ac button isnt pushed, I have NO problems, but I live in texas, its hot as hell here, and I cant go anywhere without AC with 2 little girls in the back seat. I checked the vaccum hoses, I cleaned the IACV, which did have alot of carbon build up on it. But I dont know what else to do. What causes it to idle up and down up and down up and down, like that fast, and when it goes up, I hear the click from the AC. When I am going down the highway, it doesnt do that idling, and it blows WAY colder. Any thoughts or ideas would be helpful. It is way to hot and humid here to not have a working AC in a black car lol

Not sure if you are referring to something abnormal as your idle will fluctuate as the compressor goes on and off. The AC will be cooler when you are driving as you are turning the compressor faster.
If it is something abnormal, you may have to replace the IACV. Mine had a weird idle that would go away when I turned on lights or AC. Replacing the IACV fixed it.

Re: 93 Civic DX engine idling up and down with AC on

Its hard for me to explain. Its like the car runs fine until I turn the AC on, it goes up down up down up down, like every second it idles up and the next second it idles down. Real fast. It was doing that before I replaced the AC compressor, thats why I replaced it. It kept doing that and the car would die at stop lights, and over 2 months time it burned the compressor up completely. I dont want to burn another one up. I took it to a friend who works at a mechanic shop, and he ran tests and told me I burned up the compressor. So I bought a new one, and he put it in today, and its still doing that idling crap! Its frustrating. Too hot and humid to drive without AC here. Is there any reason other than the IAC that it would be doing that? It only happens when the AC is on. I dont understand it. Thank you for your input

May be a bad IACV or vacuum leak. See if it threw a code: http://check-engine-light-codes.blog...retrieval.html

That took me a minute to find lol it was hidden well. and it blinked one long paused for a few seconds then one long and then 7 fast flashes. since there is no 27, I figure its a 10 and 17, 10 being IAT sensor, and 17 being VSS, and I am sure the VSS is messed up, my car runs 3 miles slower than it says it is. My tomtom dont lie. Can you tell me where the IAT is? I cant find anything about its location online. A pic would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 93 Civic DX engine idling up and down with AC on

IAT should be the only sensor in the air filter box. It'll be downstream from the filter. The VSS should be right on top of the tranny. If you have a manual trans then it'll be the only sensor connected to the trans.

BTW: I feel ya bro, I've got a black on black car in TX too.

Re: 93 Civic DX engine idling up and down with AC on

Well I found the IAT on the back of the intake manifold. I bought a new one, it cost me $50 and put it in, and the kicking on and off seems to have stopped. If I rev the engine real high and let off of the gas it tries to kick the compressor off one time, but not over and over like it was. Its like it catches itself. So, if anyone elses's compressor kicks on and off constantly and revs up and down constantly, I would definitely check the IAT. It is a $50 part, but its worth not having to have to buy a $350 compressor. If I had checked the OBD1 when I bought the car a few months ago, I could have saved my compressor. But I guess now I know Learn from my mistakes. Thanks for all your help Lazlong
