Charging issue 95 DX
So here is the problem, I got a 95 DX that has been through our two families for about 10 years and done great. My brother had it last and let it sit for a year before I took it and I am now restoring it to working condition (plus some performance upgrades). After changing the ground wires, distributor wires and sprark plugs I changed the alternator and battery. All this before trying to start it. It started fine but the voltage at the battery when the car is running is only about 12.5v and doesn't change much at 2k rpm. I did not change the alternator wiring at all yet, all the grounds are 4ga. I did several tests on the battery, will take and keep a charge, and the alternator, car on, higher rpm, cable conductivity, etc. So I am left to wonder if the alternator is bad. This thing is a PITA to remove so if it is not it I don't want to take it out. Any ideas on what it is or if there is a way to isolate the alternator enough to verify it with it still in the engine. Thanks.
Re: Charging issue 95 DX
If you can get it to an auto parts store, they can put an electrical tester on the system and monitor the alternator output while the car is starting and running.
Re: Charging issue 95 DX
I ended up taking it to Autozone to test. Failed. The clerk got a new one and I made them test it, it also failed. They got one more and it passed. Reinstalled and now everything is great. even changed my Alt cable to be 6ga instead of the 10ga that was on it. No more AZ parts for me.
