Speedometer 5 mph off - 87

Speedometer 5 mph off - 87
So I had a question. It seems that my speedometer is 5 mph off. I just bought the car, and while my wife was following me home, she said I was doing 5 mph under the whole way!
So, I was wondering, does the speedometer effect the odometer? I filled the gas tank, and reset the trip meter, planning to figure my MPG when I next refill. But, if the speedometer/odometer are showing an inflated mileage because I'll travel at 40 on the Speedo, but am actually only doing 35 mph.... I won't get an accurate figure. Know what I mean?
