Rattling noise when shifting up

so i have a 94 honda civic CX hatch manual with a D15B8 (sad i kno, but not for long). bought it with a tiny metallic rattle only when i shift from 1st - 2nd and from 2nd - 3rd. havent really given it a good look-see so im just trying to find some opinions on what could possibly be causing the problem. also it feels kinda sluggish when shifting up like its struggling to catch the gear. any help would be appreciated!

also idk if this will help, but the guy i bought it from said its been sitting in his garage for a long time (about 2-3yrs). with only 68K miles on the stock (current) engine.

You might need to replace the transmission or it might just be a bad clutch. Does it grind a little when you shift or does it ever pop out of gears ?

i wouldn't say it grinds, but makes a rattling noise when it shifts and it shifts pretty smooth. and no it hasnt ever popped out of gear.

Re: Rattling noise when shifting up

Start by replacing your transmission fluid... does the noise come from under the hood or the shifter assembly? It could be worn out shifter bearings..

It may take a little time and cost some money, but draining the transmission may help you. Drain the fluid into a pan and check for any metal shavings. Its a long shot, but you never know. I'd first start by checking the exhaust. My heat shield for the exhaust manifold on mine was loose and rattled every time I accelerated. Broken hangers could also be a possibility. That won't cost you anything and it's fairly simple to do. Have you tried revving it in neutral to replicate the sound at all?
Hahaha. I see we replied with the same thing!

Yea definitely don't jump to the "Change your transmission" conclusion. That's not exactly cheap. ^Some great ideas there.

it sounds like its coming from the assembly itself because when it makes the noise i can feel it in the shift **** when changing gears.

ill check the trans fluid and check and see whats up. and ill also check the heat shields and for any loose bolts as well. i never really thought a heat shield could cause a racket like that under the hood haha. and as for revving it in neutral i have tried that and doesnt seem to be making the noise. but another thing i noticed and dont know if i mentioned it earlier the noise only occurs when i let out the clutch and instantly when the gear grabs it makes the noise for a few seconds them dissapates.

Re: Rattling noise when shifting up

as for changing the trans i have the money for swaps and junk (i contract for the govt) and would make it alot easier to just buy a new/used trans because i was also going to swap out the motor for a d16z6 in a few months or even sooner. so just seeing my options for right now trying to figure out if i should fix it or just swap it.

Also check the rad supports - my fan housing and the AC/rad have something loose in there that rattle. some found cracks in the exhaust header that rattle too.

All the easy ones done, grit your teeth - could be trans...

on separate note, FLCL is too crazy/non-sense for me - i prefer the full-metal panic
