oil leak

What is this thing? It is the only leak on my motor. The bolts seem to be tight, holding it together and to the back of the head, I guess I need a seal of some sort. Any help is appreciated.

It is a 1.6 vtec in a 1995 ex. I noticed my friends 1.5 did not have it on his car.

Re: oil leak

vtec solenoid, it allows the cam to change over at higher rpm. there is also an oil pressure switch near the bottom. the top cylinder is the solenoid, but it is bolted to the main valve body. if you remove the entire piece, there is a screen gasket you can change if the only problem is oil leak. there is also a smaller gasket between the cylinder top and the body (not shown in pic since they are still assembled.

Re: oil leak

Thank you for the reply. I believe mine to be leaking out of the gasket not shown in your pic.

Re: oil leak

thats easier to change because you just take out the top 3 bolts and remove the cylinder piece. there is a smaller o-ring type gasket in there.

Re: oil leak

I was thinking about changing them both out just to make sure I got it. I am not sure how it works and it doesn't look like it, but is there any type of timing bits I have to worry about while taking it off?

Re: oil leak

no, just make sure to line it up how it was before. its basically an oil pressure switch and the solenoid that lets more oil in. there is nothing special to adjust or set.
