Noob engine swap/replacement

First off I am new to the world of cars, and I had bought and 01 civic coupe love everything about it other than it being automatic. Engine went to **** within 3 months tho leaving me with the options to replace it with what it originally had a lower miles (1.7L sohc), a better engine or sell it. Considering I live in Maine and the body on it is "freggin mint" and I bought it for $2000 and my buddies are telling me I'll only get scrap value for it, it's worth keeping and trying to get it on the road again. What I am trying to figure out from square one is what is available and realistic to put in it and from there which engine too choose from. My father in law has a garage to do the swap and knows how to put it all together, just has too much on his plate to help me figure out this I guess basic stuff.
So without really knowing much this is what I thought of and hopefully people can help me narrow it down and also let me know if what I am talking about even exists:
1: 4cyl 1.7l sohc
2: 4cyl 1.8l sohc
3: either of those in a dohc
4: either of those in sohc with vtech
5: either of those in dohc with vtech
6: 6cyl sohc
7: 6cyl dohc
8: both of those with vtech

Appreciate any help with keeping in mind, I really don't know a while hell of a lot of what I am doing.

Forgot to add, it was a 01 Civic coupe orginally with the 1.7L 4cyl no vtech (as far as I know) again as far as I know orignal engine had 200,000 miles

Did you read the threads on the top of this section marked as "sticky"?

They have tons, I mean tons of info.

Read through and come back to ask what you did not understand.
