HELP!! Need insight and direction
HELP!! Need insight and direction
I am a noob to Honda's so I probly should not have bought a turbo'ed civic, but to late now. Anyway I was told it has a D15 block, whick I found stamp verifing whick read D15B. I was also told it has a D16 V-Tec head, which I think it is, it says V-tec on the head. Its a 1996 civic, not sure what tranny yet, its a 5 speed with a new clutch apparently.
So heres the problem, soon after buying I noticed blue smoke under acceleration, I did a compression test, and it came out 75 75 80 80, not good
So I called a shop and it sound expensive to have some elts do rings, so I was considering getting a different engine all together. The problem with this is I dont know what will work with what I have, I think it has an OB1 conversion?? because of turbo set up, not sure. It has a greddy T3 set up. So any help would be appreciated. In a perfect world I would like to just put in a different motor, and put turbo set up on it??
Any help would be appreciated Thanks

Re: HELP!! Need insight and direction
Unless your willing to spend some coin or a low mile jdm engine or have an engine rebuilt then sell the turbo, an older worn engine will have continual problems if it's turbo'd and it doesn't sound like your experienced enough to handle them.
Re: HELP!! Need insight and direction
Any bottom end from a D15 or 16 will work. Chances are with a turbo you will need up-graded internals though ($$$). They probably didn't up-grade and that's why it lost compression across all cylinders.
Re: HELP!! Need insight and direction
I am assuming this set up was built correctly, the bolts on all of the turbo stuff does not look like it has been wrenched on for quite a while, with that said, what kind of coin are we looking at? I would be happy with around 250hp good drivability, and somewhat dependable. I already have a twin turbo Audi, this is just a toy, something to learn on. So would a stock d16 bottom hold that kind of hp? If not what should I look for and what kind of pricing am I looking at??

Re: HELP!! Need insight and direction
A stock bottom end will hold up to 16psi, but your pushing it hard at that point.
If you want a bottom end capable of reliably putting out 250hp I would expect to spend $2k

Re: HELP!! Need insight and direction
So if I was willing to live with a little less hp for now, and do a swap later. Could I go with a d16y7? I found a good deal on the whole motor, would I be better off with my vtec top, or does it even make a difference if the car is boosted?
Re: HELP!! Need insight and direction
I would stay with your setup and switch the bottom end- if I could. That all depends on how the heads are. Probably can't tell if there good just by a leakdown test 'cause of the horrendous compression loss. You need to pull the heads and have them checked and might as well have them worked if they're good. If they're no good then look for a VTEC engine as I think you'll have to change the ECU, exhaust and maybe the harness (I think) to fit the non-VTEC engine.
