Intake manifold swap
Intake manifold swap
I have a 97 Honda Civic 1.6 liter and was wondering if I can take a larger intake manifold out of another vehicle that would line up to give better performance? If so, what vehicles might work.

Re: Intake manifold swap
D16y8 mani should swap over and that will work best if your planning on going F/I in the future, if your staying N/A then use the D16z6 mani.

Re: Intake manifold swap
That is a dumb question, wow.
Just kidding, for six months I couldn't figure out what all these abbreviations mean.
F/I = forced induction, ie. turbo or supercharger.
N/A = natural aspirated, ie. an all motor build.

Lol!! I am going to go N/A as I am a poor boy. I pretty much want to find cheap ways to increase HP and fuel efficiency. You suggested the D16y8 manifold. Do you happen to know how much larger that would be or the increase that I might get? To me, even 5% is worth it to me because I get to take things apart!!! Also, I was wanting to switch out the TB to a slightly larger one. I think the specs for the size were about 56mm and I was wanting to find one about 60mm or greater from another vehicle. If I have to bore out the mani to match up then I will. I just want the stuff to line up and be all that i can be!
Re: Intake manifold swap
So I did more research and found out that I can pretty easily switch to the y8 manifold from the original DI6Y7 manifold that I have now. I found a literal step by step on how to do it but they say the only real benefits that it has is a little bit better breathability for the engine and the side mount of the throttle body and that is really all. Can I get more with something else or is that all I can get? I am happy with that but, you know more is funner!!!

Re: Intake manifold swap
An intake and exhaust will make your car sounds cool, but without dropping some coin on a turbo set-up it's hard to make an engine significantly faster.
The mods, at least in my opinion, that make are car fun to drive are suspension and brakes.

Re: Intake manifold swap
Tomorrow I am going to go to the salvage yard and track down the Y8 intake manifold. I am still doing research as to which TB to get. A turbo is way out of my price range. What I plan to do is to install a cold air intake system as well as 2 and a quarter exhaust with a high flow mufler. I am hoping this will total give me at least 15-20 HP and at least save me a bit on gas.

Re: Intake manifold swap
I don't think that you'll net more than 10 hp and that's optimistic, maybe a a little bit more if you actually had the car tuned. If you did go turbo at some point then you would get significant gains with those mods since they're what a turbo thrive off of.
A mild turbo set-up may not be that far outside your price range if you save for awhile, the trick is in hunting junk yards and craigslist for used OEM parts off Volvos, Mitsubishis and such. I would go that route on my car if the EMS wasn't $1600, but you can chip an ECU with chrome for $100 so that makes it easier.

Re: Intake manifold swap
I was thinking of doing the port and polish myself. I found a hone that I can use that will polish out the insides. It is only about 30.00 to get the proper sized hone. Any words of caution.
