Changed engine from vtec to non
Changed engine from vtec to non
I just put a non vtec engine in my daughters 1996 Honda EX. There is no hook up on the head for the sensor. Can the vtec system be over-ridden? Also the knock sensor was broken. The engine started right up, but after it warms up the idle varies up and down by about a 500 rpms. It also has the check engine light on. I need help please.

Re: Changed engine from vtec to non
You could probably get away with the original wiring, but you'd definitely have to change the ECU. It's throwing a CEL because the VTEC ecu wants to control VTEC that's not there. I'm I'm surprised it hasn't thrown the car into limp mode (i.e. won't rev past 4000 RPM). And yes, since you have a non-VTEC engine, there's not going to be any place to put the VTEC sensor plug.
