Question needing some turbo help

Hello all, i am in iraq, my daughter is due in aug., and im scheduled to be home around december. im interested in putting a turbo on my car. i have a 2000 honda civic ex, with a 1.6L, a k&n cold air intake, stock standard trans, and a stock exaust system. it has around 100thsnd miles on it

is there even any reason to spend money on a turbo for this model car?
what are some things that i can do to increase performance?
what is the best (inexpensive) brand, or type of turbo for my car?
around how much is a turbo going to cost me?
and what else am i going to have to change in my car?

Re: needing some turbo help

First, these questions must be answered.

How much power do you want? How much money are you willing to spend?

Then, start searching on google on what is recommended/needed.

Re: needing some turbo help

well, im hopeing to get to around 220 to 240 hp. Over all, my plan for performance changes are to change the exhaust, new headers, cat, and cat back.
im going to put a new suspension kit on it, new brakes, rotors, and calipers.
tires and rims

i dont really want to spend more than 6 grand on performance, and im not really looking for the nicest, most expensive stuff. just decent performance parts.

this is my start of my search of brand names, and types, and such on the things that some may recomend.

Re: needing some turbo help

*ahem* header.. not headers.. It's an inline 4, not a V- engine.. there's only one exhaust manifold.

and there is a lof of good info here
https://www.civicforums.com/forums/7...turbo-faq.html

take a gander at a bunch of links in that. It'll help you understand different things about turbos, fuel management, etc. Sure, it's geared toward the 7th gen civic (because this forum used to be 7thgencivic.com before it changed to civicforums *sadface*) but it's good info nonetheless

if you spend the money up front, it'll save you money in the long run

yeah I know dude I have a daytona turbo I musta put the s on accident when I was thinking ahead of myself. Thanks for having the extra time to point that out for me, cuz I was too busy workin on my car.... Anyways back to the guy in need.. Do u plan on putting this on urself or takin it to a shop? Labor is pretty bank breakin.. U should figure this in ur budget cuz some kits are pretty pricey. some mild street kits can be around 3000. Do some research on what size turbo ur planning to get this will determine the rest of the setup. MY BEST ADVICE IS TO HIT THE BOOKS!!! That's what i did when I put my turbo on.

P.S how is it over there? My uncle was over there not too long ago.

I say keep the money you are going to spend on that turbo and use it on your little girl.

You're not the only one that did that, and your post isn't the one that triggered that first bit.. The OP did as well, and seeing as how he's asking for help, he's obviously trying to learn about his car so he can do it right. Hence the reason I posted in a more informative way instead of "OMFG YOU ONLY HAZ ONE HEADER NOOB"

Re: needing some turbo help

haha, so old school, its not bad, really sandy, i wanna put a bullet in the heads of everyone in this country, but thats just me, dont beleive what you see on tv thats for sure.

02civici02, ive got 30g's saved on my lil girl so far, the 6 is an over time thing, not rite off, so let me do me. thank you, no disrespect.

and your rite, i am a noob, i dont know jack about imports, or very much about cars in general. i drove a 5.0 mercery cougar xr-7, all stock, but ive done enough work on her to know what a header(s) is. haha, so its cool,

so do you have any opinions on what is a good turbo brand, or type, or size, or w/e. just tryn to do research here first, i can put a full kit together later. ie...injectors, new manifold, etc...

In regards to turbo brands, there's been a rant floating around the internet about Garrett starting to use cheaper labor thus producing lower quality products. With that said, just be weary about the quality of turbo you buy. I haven't heard anything bad about turbonetics turbos though. You'd probably be good with a T25 or T3 sized turbo. Obviously, a ball bearing turbo will spool up faster. When I had my car (2002 civic ex) turboed, I had a garrett T3 turbo. There was something wrong with the internal wastegate actuator so it only let me boost a max of 2.5 psi. It put me at about 150hp at the wheels from a stock 127bhp (~110hp at the wheels) and tuning the cheap way with a A'PEXi VAFC-II (terrible idea, by the way)

GReddy makes a bolt on turbo kit for your car. It supplies you with a cast manifold, greddy turbo (internally wastegated), 310cc injectors with clips, and a greddy emanage (decent piggyback fuel management system). It DOES NOT however, include a blow off valve or intercooler. I can't vouch for the kit, but from what I've read, its a decent kit. It may be a good place to start, but it does run $2675 msrp.

For fuel management, I've heard a lot of good things about hondata products. Those are installed directly to your ECU, so should probably be installed professionally, unless you're 100% confident in your soldering abilities. For some reason, I've been seeing the AEM EMS (standalone engine management system) less and less.. I don't know why

For the record, I meant no disrespect by anything I posted. I apologize if any of it seemed demeaning to either of you.

And thanks for your service man. I just served 6 years in the Navy with 2 overseas deployments, 1 of which was in support of OIF/OEF, and 75% of each year I was stationed on my carrier was spent out to sea. Even though I was on a ship away from most of the danger, I can relate how much time you've sacrificed. So again, thanks for serving and be safe out there
