Driver door electrics failing

All,

This started a few years back, when the passenger electric window ceased to work on my 96 Civic EX. I swapped the regulator, but that didn't resolve the issue, I only got a new regulator out of the deal. I know the regulator is good as when I put voltage to it, it works. All other electric windows work fine from both their respective door switch AND the driver door control switch.

I then replaced the passenger window switch, but that only got me a new passenger window switch, not a working window. At that point I gave up the DIY and took it to a Honda dealer. They couldn't fix it either, stating it was a wiring harness and wanted like $100/hr. to diagnose with no estimate to complete...screw that! We've been living with no working passenger window.

The other week the electric door locks stopped working. I looked at the manual and thought it was the door lock unit. Went back into DIY mode and ordered up a electric door lock unit. Tore apart the driver door and replace the unit. You guessed it, I only ended up with a new door lock unit and no working electric door locks!

I also checked all the fuses and they look fine, both under the hood and under dash.

So now I'm thinking perhaps I've got a broken wire(s) in the flex hose that connects the driver door to the car. When I looked at that, I didn't see an easy way to remove the hose. Can anyone tell me how to go about doing that or if you have any other ideas as to where my problem(s) might lie?

Thanks in advance,
Steve

Re: Driver door electrics failing

I'm working through the same issues on my '97 Civic. first: driver's mirror stopped working left to right; second: passenger lock stopped working; third passenger window stopped working.

I took the rubber boot off the connector on the driver's side door and found broken wires for the mirror and door lock. Now I'm thinking I broke the wire to the window when I put the boot back on. I think all those wires are brittle and breaking from daily wear.

If you compress the weatherstrip around the door near the connector you'll see two little green buttons on the connector. The rubber boot has holes that snap over those buttons. Pry the rubber boot off those buttons and the boot will peel back. Chances are you'll see a couple loose wire ends. Be careful not to break any more.

Now I'm trying to figure out how to fix this mess.

Re: Driver door electrics failing

Interesting. Misery loves company!

I did see the green dots on the boot. I went looking in the manual and online to see if there was a replacement boot w/ wiring, but came up empty.

I really think I've got busted wires in there too, as when I open the door all the way I can see the front edge of the door touching the wiring boot.

Thanks for the update!

Re: Driver door electrics failing

in between the drivers door and the car body, the wires are worn out and exposed, so I think I'm going to find a used part at a local junk yard and replace the entire drivers side door wireing

The wire you get at the salvage yard is probably going to be just as worn out as yours. Your gonna have to run wires anyways why not just run fresh new wires.

Re: Driver door electrics failing

My problem is understanding the wires in the doorway. Does the boot come off the car door or does it come off the car body? Can the wires be replaced in the boot?

I tried looking for a replacement unit at Majestic Honda but couldn't find a relevant part.
