Mud Tires on a 2000 EX?
Mud Tires on a 2000 EX?
Hey i have a 2000 Civic EX. I live in North Idaho and have to drive 7 miles on a dirt road to and from home every day. And the road sucks. I have tried two different kinds of studded snow tires and neither of them work too well. I still have to chain up more than i want.
I saw Maxxis Bighorn MT-762 tires on a VW Bug today and would love to get something like that on my civic for winter, But i can't find any small enough. I could kick myself for not looking for the tire size when i saw them in town.
Any help with regards to Mud Tires that might fit my civic would be great.
Here is a link to the tires...

Thanks.

Re: Mud Tires on a 2000 EX?
I don't think there is a single mud tire on the market that would fit..
Mud tires are generally designed for trucks, so they come in sizes like 235/65/R17, which is way to big for a civic. Wide, aggressive tires that fit on VWs exist, but they are extremely expensive and I'm still not sure they would work..

hmm i would look for aggressive tread but also a "soft" type of tire compound normally for off-road use. the softer the tire, the less you feel vibration and the more traction you get due to the tire conforming to the gravel better. these types of tires are pretty rare in a 14 or 15 inch tho.

mindbomber. the tires that i saw on the vw were not special vw tires. they were the same tires my brother has on his express van.
gearbox. I am looking for something with as nobby tires as possible. studded. for winter. I don'e have a problem in summer.
Thanks though, I'll keep on searching.

oh okay, i thought you meant for dry road. yeah in the winter i think some snow tires would work but then they do wear out faster esp if the rest of the road is dry.
Re: Mud Tires on a 2000 EX?
BFG makes their AT in a 195/75-14 which would fit but you might have a little rubbing on hard turns.
Maxxis has a 185r14c and a 195r14c mudder (bravo series) which should fit. They also have the Buckshot mudder in a 195r14c. The smallest Bighorn they make is a 27X8.50R14LT.
Any of these may work for what you need but all may rub just slightly.

Re: Mud Tires on a 2000 EX?
it's very hard to imagine...
do you have any pics of the roads you have to pass?
It's north of washington, so can't imagine snow/mud mix for them.
if mud is prevalent, what you need are not snow tires anyway, since they do not have enough spacing in their blocks to avoid them becoming slick tires.
If snow, you good, but if you using studded, you need even more tire/fender clearance to avoid the studs to make a wreck of you inner fenders, right?

Don't get Mud tires! They suck in the snow! The only place they do well is in the mud. I have had mud tires on 2 different trucks and they feel like slicks in the snow.
Get All terrains, I suggest the BFG A/T's I have had them on 3 trucks now and they do awesome just about anywhere!

Re: Mud Tires on a 2000 EX?
yes, that was the idea of asking for a picture.
depending on the terrain, the tires need to be selected carefully.
the mud type in snow will pack large snow in between the blocks, so they will not release from the tire as mud would.
snow tires will get slicks tires as well.
all terrain will pack smaller blocks of snow and they will release a bit, will not be as good as mud on mud, but is a good midpoint.

Alright. i'll get some pictures of the road and post them. I Just want better tires for the snow. I know i have a 2 wheel drive car and many people don't drive them in the snow, but I like the idea and don't have the money for another car. I'll get those pictures up soon.

Cooper Weathermaster, Nokian Hakkapeliita (sp?), Arctic Claw, are all great snowtires. and getting STUDDED snowtires makes a HUGE difference! stock size tires would be best. no need for larger. the narrower actually cut through the snow a little bit better. dont go mud, go stud. for winter driving at least.

I just got up north, and dread winter this year as I haven't had the chance to get tires for the weather yet... Went through a Colorado Winter last season relatively well on street tires.. Not Recommending that though...
