Holes drilled into gas tank; temporary fix?

My car got stolen last friday and it was recovered yesterday, but instead of using the drain bolt, they drilled 1 1/4" hole and 2 1/8" holes to syphon the gas. I'm gonna do some research on this, but do you guys know of a simple permanent or temparary fix?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Holes drilled into gas tank; temporary fix?

What did your insurance company say about it?

Emergency patch on a punctured tank used to be rubbing a bar of LAVA soap on the hole until the leak stopped, then it could be driven to the shop to be fixed correctly: Pull tank and send it to a professional to solder the holes shut....or just replace the tank if it's got rust.

Not sure if it had to be lava brand, but that's what we used.

Permatex makes a 2 part epoxy for fuel tanks
Clean and dry the area muck up a screw and put the screw in the hole , muck over the head of the screw and let it cure

Thiis is exaclty what I was thinking. Screws with fine thread (mm), plus some sort of permatex + 1 hour or more drying. Let's see...

6th gen and earlier are incredibly easy to steal

OP this happened to the '97 correct?
That blows, I would go with the special gas tank epoxy mentioned earlier. unless you live where there's minimal rust, then maybe check the junkyards

(moving to 6th gen section)

Steelweld epoxy.

You can get it at any auto parts store.

Yes they are!! This is why in 01 when they introduced the immobilizer system in the civic it was a big deal. There was a time when 90"s Honda's were one of the most stolen vehicles. They probably still are.

All you need to steal an old Honda is a flat head and a hammer apparently.

Re: Holes drilled into gas tank; temporary fix?

Guys, thanks a lot for your help. insurance compensated me $690 and I managed to find an excellent mechanic who did it for a little over 450. Honda charges 683 btw here in Reno.

Take note that he had to order the tank from Sacramento, and even Honda would have had to buy used since the non-aftermarket tanks are discontinued.

I still don't understand why civics are so easy to steel. Maybe it's just that people who don't have much money end up keeping them, and then... theft time when a part needs to be replaced.

Re: Holes drilled into gas tank; temporary fix?

When gas is over $4.00 a gallon they will just drill hole in your tank for the gas alone.

I know someone who had his Dodge Caravan stolen 4X and someone who had his Ram 1500 stolen 2X ... he actually seen the Ram after the second time and didn' report because he didn't want it back lol

PM me and I will tell you how to reduce your risk of having it happen anymore to you

they're super easy to steal because there's no anti-theft measures in place besides a key lock and steering lock. both are easily defeated.
you may want to install a hidden kill switch only known to you that will leave the fuel pump or the ignition disabled

Re: Holes drilled into gas tank; temporary fix?

I'm thinking about installing a kill switch. I currently have a club on it, but I didn't when it got stolen. I know that clubs are easily defeated, but they work because if a thief looks inside, they might roll their eyes and go off.

Gonna pm REX above to see what he has to say.
