'98 Civic HX 235k engine whine

Bought a '98 HX several weeks ago. Has been running well, but on a cold start driving it home a couple miles yesterday. It began making a whining or high pitched grinding/scraping sound. I got home and realized there was not enough oil so i filled up when it was warm. The next day I researched common problems for the car related to this noise. I went out started it and the noise persisted, changing the rpm changes the pitch. No matter in or out, the clutch does not change the sound. I've ruled out the transmission and water pump, I have 2 hunches to go on, timing belt bearing or something wrong in or on the engine. Past 2500 rpm when its cold makes terrible scraping. It is loudest when in a gear especially 2 and slowing down from a higher speed(above 2500rpm). But the noise seems to go away when warmed up. Any help please?

How much oil did it require to reach the "full" mark on the dipstick?

Got a recording of the noise?

Ive been having the same issue, i think, altough the whine is louder in first sometimes and sometimes it doesnt even make it till 3-3500 rpm if i give it the exact amount of throttle (still in first). Thought it was the tranny at first, but then I randomly put some engine restore in the oil one day and for the duration of the product (approx 500km) the noise was gone :$ Im really scared of this beeing something really painfull to change in the block.... I have a '97 d16y7 cx hatch
