DIY Clutch Job Emergency!

Help!

https://www.civicforums.com/forums/1...h-install.html

2000 Civic EX, MT. DIY clutch job, one and only daily driver. I followed the above guide to the letter and I am experiencing a nightmare getting the tranny back into the engine.

The alignment tool fits, but nothing I have tried in the past 6-8 hours of trying to fit the tranny back into the engine has worked. Jacking the engine and tranny into alignment get me close, but we just can't get them to mate up to the point where we can close it up.

My brother and I are physically exhausted literally to the point of muscle failure, and we have no idea where to go from here. Any help would be incredibly appreciated!

Re: DIY Clutch Job Emergency!

Did you test fit the disc on the input shaft before you bolted it on?

It can be a PITA to get the input shaft to rotate....try getting someone turn the crank while you jockey the Trans in place.

The alignment tool fits the old clutch disk and the new clutch disk, so I'm assuming the thing fits? I didn't test fit directly though.

Should I be freehand lifting the tranny up and trying to fit it in that way, or am I doing the right thing back jacking it up and trying to fit it with support from below?

How do I turn the crank??

Thanks for answering, we're freaking out over here.

From the front of engine, turn the crank

You sure would expect it to.

Pictures look like you are a long way away from getting it close. You gotta get it straight and somewhat close to the right position before it can slide on.

You gotta get the tip of the input shaft through the center of the disc and then through the pilot bearing, and that isn't easy when you're trying to Hulk it up in place. I'd have it on a jack to hold up the weight but line it up and jockey it around by hand.

Turn the crank and recheck the disc centering by eyeball in several position, the plastic tool doesn't always get it perfect, fine tuning may be necessary.......it's a lot tougher to get the steel shaft in than it is to get a small plastic guide to fit.

19mm socket on the crank pulley bolt.

Take a deep breath, count to 10.....

Re: DIY Clutch Job Emergency!

A real long bolt or two (or a tapered punch or anything similar) may help get it lined up
but DO NOT try to tighten anything until the trans butts up to the block.

Ok, when I turn the crank with the alignment tool in, I can see it turn. Should I be hearing the clutch disk scratch around in there or does this mean something is wrong?

Only if the trans is shoved up against it somewhere.

Re: DIY Clutch Job Emergency!

Are you also looking for an easy way tophysically lift and position the transmission without a transmission jack?

when I did my auto to manual swap I was having a hell of a time man handling it in (bench press style, lol)

put two small 2x4s resting along the frame from the strut towers down toward the front of the car (if you're looking into the engine bay this will be north to south)

then place a long 4x4 west (right side of the vehicle) to east (left side of the vehicle).

then use two ratcheting straps, one to hold the transmission to the other strap, and one to lift the transmission up.

basically you are using the vehicle frame to create an engine crane.

here I made you a diagram

Re: DIY Clutch Job Emergency!

Thanks for all the help dudes, your replies got us through that night.

Turns out it was the wrong freaking part. The amazon seller I got it from sent me a part for a non EX 2000 Civic. There was no way in hell it was going to fit.

I had to find a ride to an autozone and got the right kit, in duralast. The sucker popped right in. An entire day and a heck of a lot of tranny wrestling wasted.

LESSON LEARNED: Triple check compatibility, no matter who says what, and always test fit.

We thought we were going crazy there for a bit!

Re: DIY Clutch Job Emergency!

Been there before!

I've done like 5 different brake jobs for my friends and family, and last year had a hell of a time with new calipers because the guy at lordco said "oh, see here this is an "L" that means it's the left side."

Then I asked why there was no r on the right side and ha said that's just the way they are, because it's a set... lol

Long story short it turns out that "L" had nothing to do with the left side, lol.

It took me three days after trying different ways to bleed the brakes before I tried swapping the calipers, FML! lol
