P0122 TPS on a 2000 Civic M/T
P0122 TPS on a 2000 Civic M/T
2000 Civic M/T, 195K, D16Y8; engine has an very intermittent stumble most notably in 4th or 5th gear; has a P0122 Throttle Position Sensor /A Circuit Low Input; Confirmed (second time). First time with this code (month ago); replaced TPS, drove car for 10 straight days with no problems. Daughter drives out of town and gets MIL (this code). Freeze Frame data from my Actron 9580 scanner had TPS percentage of 0.4 at 1,337 RPM; 14 MPH; Load 30%; MAP 8.6; Coolant 106; IAT 46; STFT -6%, LTFT -1.6; Closed loop.
4,000 miles ago, I remove TB and cleaned it. The +5V reference also feeds the Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor.
ErictheCarGuy says never remove throttle bodies, just clean on engine, also said he has never seen a TPS on a Honda go bad. Could this be a bad PCM? If I do replace PCM, will it need to be reflashed? It remote keyfob work?
Thanks for any help.

TPS can and does go bad.
So can the computers.
So can wiring.
Terminals inside the connector can get loose, same for terminals inside any connector along the way between sensor and computer.

The fix – replaced the throttle body with one from a salvage yard. I at first replaced the TPS with a brand new one. The factory TPS was riveted to the throttle body. Not a big deal removing, but it did take some time to calibrate the new sensor at 0.5 VDC at idle. It seemed to work well. The problem did not go away. The scanner would show TPS (voltage as a percentage) would still drop whenever the engine stumbled. I got another throttle body and the car is running fine. Because the sensor is riveted in place, maybe positioning it on the throttle body requires very precise placement. If it not placed perfectly, the sensor can momentary lose its position. Doesn’t really make sense to me, the old throttle body looks fine and the butterfly shaft does not have any obvious play. ErictheCarGuy said he has never seen a TPS go bad, OK. However he never mentioned how many throttle bodies he replaced.
