new distributor---low power/delayed shift

Hello everyone, my '98 D16Y8 engine started vibrating badly, so I put in new distributor/rotor/cap/wires/plugs. I did not pay attention to the placement of the distributor since it only goes in one way. I did ensure that the rotor was in the same approximate position as the old one. It now runs OK, but has weak acceleration and seems to shift to 3rd gear at too high a rpm. Some have told me that I need to adjust the timing with a timing light, others have said I need to replace vacuum lines on the transmission. I did not disconnect the negative battery terminal as the book says---did I fry something? It is all stock and the car is for normal, tame transportation purposes. Could I try different distributor positions until it runs right? Any ideas? Thank you for your time.

Re: new distributor---low power/delayed shift

as the book says
Look up what's involved in replacing the distributor in that book.

My thoughts:

1) Check and verify that firing order is correct and you didn't get wires in the wrong places on the dist cap.

2) Check and adjust ignition timing to the correct specification, as per the service manual. (Yes, you need a timing light to do it right.)

others have said I need to replace vacuum lines on the transmission.
Wow.
