Squealing sometimes when first starting

Hello,

Just recently I've been having small moments of squealing at startup, ONLY at startup. The noise doesn't continue after the fact that the car is running, and at first I thought it to be my belts which were all in very poor condition.
So, I replaced all three belts with OEM ones, and went to start the car after installation. It's still squealing to my dismay.

I've tried different tensions within specified range, as the Honda service manual recommends between .31-.39 inches of deflection. I've tried everything from .31 all the way to .39. Also, I know for a fact that my A/C compressor clutch is shot, but this has never caused the car to squeal previously. The clutch turns with no hesitation, although there is a good bit of freeplay when shimmied by hand.

I've read threads giving a large number of possibilities, but most of the OP's were not being very specific. So, I decided to post with all the specifics I could possibly give. Anyways, the car starts fine most of the time. But I've noticed that the sound is the same sound that the starter makes when you have the engine running and try to turn the ignition, if that makes any sense. This makes me believe it could be the starter, but wanted more opinions on this since the majority of the time it seems ok. Occasionally, it will make the squealing and not start, and the engine sounds like it is half spinning then dying.

Any information to assist?

Thanks.

Remove the belts and try starting it. If you can move the a/c clutch side to side don't put the ac belt on at all till you fix that.

Re: Squealing sometimes when first starting

Jason,

The A/C clutch is quite wobbly. I knew this before buying the car and have been putting off the repairs as I am extremely short on the cash. I figured it might cause problems but I have never had it do this before. That is why I am wondering if it had something to do with my starter, as I said before the noise is the same noise that occurs when you try to turn the ignition when the engine is running. How would the A/C belt affect this?

But thanks, I'll look into that as my next repair.
