Serpentine Belt Snapped

Hey whats up you guys?
Within the last month I bought a 1999 Civic SI which has 134xxx original miles on it. didnt have a swap or anything, had the original B16A2. The guy i bought it from said he was going down the highway doing about 60 when the serpentine belt broke. And now it WONT start.. He thought it was the timing belt because the car just wouldent go anywhere. anyways he took it to goodyear and they said that it would cost about 5k to repair.. thats obviously not true. Ive heard several theories about what can happen: 1. the belt snaps at a high rpm and interferes with the timing belt therefore messing up the timing. 2. You can bend a Valve 3. the car wont start because you need it if the car has an overhead cam, in this case DOHC.

Can anybody help please?? I dont know what to do.

Re: Serpentine Belt Snapped

If a serpentine belt let go, the worst issue would be if it was the alternator belt and the battery ran down.
If it threw the AC or PS belts, they won't keep the engine from running.

If it was the TIMING belt...... that's gonna be a bit more costly.

You bought it. Open the hood and look.

If it doesn't run, just start from scratch and figure out why. Compression, spark, fuel.

anyways he took it to goodyear and they said that it would cost about 5k to repair..
Damn, that's steep. They must not want the work. (Wait, it's real work. They definitely don't want that.)
Stay away from chain stores.

I'd guess 2k tops even if it needed all the valves, and at a dealership. A whole engine may be cheaper.

DIY fix is dirt cheap in comparison.

the other day i popped the hood and discover the belts were all tangled up together. at the moment the only belt that is on the car is the timing belt. no a/c, alternator, power steering, etc.

The car will not start without these right?

Re: Serpentine Belt Snapped

Assuming no other problems....
If the battery is good, it will start and run without any of the 3 accessory belts (alt, power steering, air conditioner).

It will run until the battery no longer has enough charge to support electrical functions.
