98 ex sputters & dies, CEL

Last week my cel light came on while driving home, idle surged and was high, 1500+, then when going to start from a stop it hesitated, sputtered and shut off and would not start. Would crank and occasionally fire for a second then die. Luckily it was right near my house. Pushed it in the driveway. Then left for a week.

Today it started no problem and I pulled codes, 14 (IAC valve) 41 (primary o2 heater) 65 (secondary o2 heater wires).

Cleared cel and let it idle for 20 min. no cel. I havent driven it yet, but why would these codes cause it to die while driving and not start, sit for a week, start right up and seem fine?

I dont want to drive it and get stranded, luckily its warm enough for my f4i.

I also noticed, after it died and I was trying to restart it, the ecm was making some weird clicking noises.

I just drove it around for a half hour and still no cel.

From what I understand, sometimes the codes manifest themselves after a couple of cycles. Have you tried cleaning out your IAC valve? It should be located near your intake. Those last 2 codes deal with emissions... have you done anything to your exhaust system?

I pulled the IACV and sprayed it out with carb cleaner today. Exhaust is stock, but it did recently spring a leak somewhere because its noticeably louder. didnt even think about that, most likely causing the o2 codes.

Its running fine now, it was just sudden and died with no start, and I dont want it to happen again.

I don't blame you. All you can really do is monitor the situation and fix problems when you can! Good luck!
