AC, Squealing, Engine Power Loss

Hello,

I had a 2000 Manual, and after having the car sent to the dealership (as soon as I find the receipt I'll post the details) several months ago, my car had developed a squealing problem. I didn't take it back to the dealership because I was using the car heavily because of college. Now, however, I fear it has just gotten a whole lot worse. At first, it didn't seem that bad, as it only squealed when the engine wasn't warmed up. I was running the heater nearly constantly, especially when first starting off.

Last week, though, I was driving on the freeway, with the AC on, and suddenly I had a massive power loss, and a horrendously loud squealing coming from the engine bay. Turning off the AC instantly 'fixes' the problem.

It is most definitely linked to the AC, as even with the car idling, turning on the AC causes the same symptoms as above.

The car also squeals for about 10 seconds when I start the car.

I don't have a lot of mechanical experience, but I am interesting is seeing if there is any thing I can do to fix this problem. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Yes. What you're hearing is a belt that is on its way out. Mine started doing that too until I had them all changed out with my timing belt. It was an embarrassing problem that is now fixed.

Yep, sounds like you need a new belt.

Not difficult to replace, or expensive if you have someone do it.

Best case, loose belt.
Worst case, locked up compressor?

And anything inbetween!

Right, then. I'll take a look at the belt.

Thanks, all!
