Scan code P0420 01/01

I received the following code: P0420 01/01 (picture attached). I believe it to be the catalyst converter. Has anyone received this code before? I also heard that it might be more beneficial to find out why is misfiring before you replace it. Does anyone have any recommendations on how to do this?

P0420
Needs a cat. (Probably.)

I also heard that it might be more beneficial to find out why is misfiring before you replace it.
You need to know WHY the cat went bad. Many possible causes.

Misfire can kill one quick. (Was it doing that in the recent past?)
So can overfueling (rich running).
Bad fuel can kill it.
Oil burning - slowly kills cats.

Time and miles-- even if it runs perfect -- still kills cats, naturally.

If the computer has good fuel control, there are no misfires, and no exhaust leakage in the front half of the system......it's probably safe to stuff a new cat on it.
