overheating, white smoke, blown head gasket?
overheating, white smoke, blown head gasket?
hey guys im a new honda civic owner(first car) and im having some problems im hoping this community can help with.
everyone says its blown head gasket since its white smoke from hood.
just today engine started malfunctioning, at first just made not working noise when turning key in ignition.
after engine started after several attempts, car is shaky, not sounding right.
now my engine just gives up when the white smoke from hood appears.
also water is leaking from distributor area.i have to keep refilling water tank.
its a 99 civic coupe with a d16y8
as a broke college student it would be great if i can repair cheap as possible.
best place to buy legitimate parts? online parts store, junkyard, craigslist?
anyone know a good mechanic? i live in OC/LA so-cali
i checked for fault codes on my torque app. code p1457 evap came up.
then my friend used his more legit scan tool and code p0505 came up.
now there is no check engine light at all, i didnt disconnect engine either
which fault code should i go after? both? neither?
is this related to my overheating head gasket issue?
all help is greatly appreciated, thanks

Pics of leak spot would help. Sounds more like you have steam coming out from under your hood.
Maybe if you ask sl33pyriceboi nicely, he'll help you out. He's out in Garden Grove, CA

Leak near distributor, could be a burst heater hose. Gotta see where the leak starts.
But it sounds like you have overheated it.
Overheat can cause severe engine damage, like head gasket blown and warped head...
I think I'd worry about the engine first, if it isn't too late already. (If it does have severe engine damage, evaluate the whole car and see if it is even worth fixing the engine.)
Codes later IMO.

Re: overheating, white smoke, blown head gasket?
well, depending on how much you have in this car already like Ezone said evaluate if you even want to try to save it... I bought mine for 700 with a blown head gasket. I took a chance on it and it seems to have mostly paid off. I bought the head gasket kit from pepoys for about $100 and then had to grab the head bolts from Honda for $46. Luckily for me the head and block were not damaged so I just cleaned them up real good and put it back together. I now drive this sucker 180 miles a day to work and back and average 35 mpg. not to bad for 850 into a car. it took me about a day to swap the HG out, but now that I know what Im doing it wouldnt take me nearly as long to do it again. these little cars are really pretty easy to work on, especially with resources like this forum.
