Car not going into first gear all the time

The car is manual. Sometimes when I'm driving, I'll come to a stop and when it's time to go forward, I try to put the car into first and the shifter simply doesn't go. The shifter moves to the left and upwards a little bit, but not into gear. I can shift fine into all other gears. I also noticed that if the problem occurs, I can put it in second and then throw it right into first with no problem. Otherwise, if I go between neutral and 1st a few times, eventually it goes into gear. I am depressing the clutch all the way.

It's not an every day problem, but it does happen every now and then. Also, sometimes it will go into first but I have to give the shifter a bit of force. What I mean to say is even when the clutch is all the way down, I feel a slight resistance when I move it into first.

A friend said it might be a problem with the syncro.
Does anyone know what the issue is and is it something that may turn ugly later on?
