Rep Power: 0 1996 Civic EX Canada Built Left Rear Window Motor and Regulator Question
Hello All,
Thank you for reading this. As you will gather from the question, I am know little to nothing about the car I own.
So I have a 1996 Civic EX Canada Built.
I want to replace the rear window regulator and motor assembly.
Called a few part stores and got wildly differing prices. One store asked it if was Japan built when quoting, when I got the Dorman part number they had for the Japan built, it was the same part that was stocked everywhere else. Again with prices that seemed unreasonably different and no other store asked what build my car was.
So I went to the internetz and got very confused.
Is there a difference between the window motor and regulator assembly for the Japan and North American built 1996 Honda Civics?
Does this forum allow for recommendations on which manufacturer to purchase from?
Any help with my problem would be appreciated. I would like to order it from the internet as it is much less expensive, but I don't want to deal with the hassle of returning it.
Thank you again for your time.
Feel free to email me.

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one
Re: 1996 Civic EX Canada Built Left Rear Window Motor and Regulator Question
The first character of your VIN tells where the car was built.
#2 is Canadian built.
Now: Is the car built for the US market, Canada market, or somewhere else?
The regulator you got that was supposed to be for a Japan built car---Did it not work? Why not?
You say you "want to replace the rear window regulator and motor assembly."
You didn't say LEFT or RIGHT.
Do you know where LEFT or RIGHT is on a car?
Could this be why the part you got wasn't right?

Re: 1996 Civic EX Canada Built Left Rear Window Motor and Regulator Question
Looking at the factory catalog, I see the regulator is separate from the motor.
For the RIGHT REAR DOOR
The regulator has only one choice. 04721-S01-A01, $56 retail
The motor has 2 choices.
US/Cn: 04724-S01-A00, $251
Jpn: 72715-ST0-013, $216
No idea what the difference is.
All I can think of is the electrical connector, or maybe the supplier contract hasn't run out yet.
For the LEFT REAR DOOR
One regulator 04726-S01-A01, $98
ONE motor 04729-S01-A00, $251
For the RIGHT REAR DOOR
The regulator has only one choice. 04721-S01-A01, $56 retail

Yes the car is Canadian built. The VIN begins with a 2.
I have purchased anything due to the confusion. Sorry I meant to say left, driver's side.

Re: 1996 Civic EX Canada Built Left Rear Window Motor and Regulator Question
Ok, according to my info, there is no option or choice for the left rear door. (Assuming this is a US market car.)
You still didn't tell me if this is a US market or Canada market car.
My part numbers may not apply to a Canadian market car.
BTW, LEFT is the drivers side, no matter what the part is or where you stand.
Left and Right are always determined as you are sitting in the drivers seat facing forward.
(For anyone else reading this.)

All the owners have been in the US.
There are no daytime time running lights.
Is there is a quick way to make sure?

Re: 1996 Civic EX Canada Built Left Rear Window Motor and Regulator Question
or 2) a VIN check by a dealer in the US produces a result---the ISIS system in the US won't recognize a non-US market car--- this applies to a VIN inquiry and/or the parts catalog system use of the VIN.
Honda makes it quite inconvenient to bring cars across the border, but it can be done.
I know of 2 that come to this dealer, one is a Civic that was imported by the owner when he moved here from Canada, the other is an Odyssey that somehow got here from an auction and used car lot. Honda would NOT sell us a trans for the van because it was not a US market vehicle.

The price thye quoted for the part of course was 2-5 times more expensive than I have found it elsewhere.
Now that is settled. I guess my original question remains, can the Japan built part be used in a Canada build for US car? Seems strange that the local parts places would carry just the Japan built replacement and only one ask, if I did have a Japan built.
Thanks for your help. This is certainly come in handy later on I am sure as well.

According to my post here https://www.civicforums.com/forums/2...ml#post4589546
there is no differentiation in the OE parts.
Take their part, stuff it into your L.R. door.
If it doesn't work right, then take it back and complain.
