Foam Blowing Out the AC Vents

'97 Civic EX, 4DR sedan, original owner, 80K miles.
For the past few months, chunks of what appears to be dirty, dried out foam filter pieces are being blown out the vents when I turn on the AC.
I'm assuming after all these years whatever filter that is, is rotted out and needs replacing. Can someone tell me where it's located?
Thank you.

Re: Foam Blowing Out the AC Vents

It probably IS foam. Dark gray or nearly black?
There are foam seals around the edges of all the doors inside the heater box, and more foam sealing all of the ductwork pieces together. More foam in the outer dash vents for the door that you can shut them off with.

It disintegrates over time.

Re: Foam Blowing Out the AC Vents

It definitely is foam, no doubt about that. Now it's a dirty brown, as you would expect a 15 year old filter to be. It's disintegrated almost to the point of being dust. When I pull it out past the vents it just falls apart in my fingers.
I'm thinking a filter of some kind, and I'm trying to determine where so I can pull the old and replace it.

It is not any filter.

It is the seals.

What seals? There has been quite a bit of foam flying out over the past few months.

Unless you have mice leaving presents in the air plenum below the windshield. They like the insulation on the firewall and hood pads for nesting.
