Idle/Throttle Body Problem

Here is my problem. My car has a bouncing idle on start up, then once it is warmed up and i stop, the idle raises from 1000rpm then stays at about 2000rpm and then (heres the worst part) when i go to take off, something is going wrong with i think the throttle body as if its not opening/closing properly. This makes it difficult to drive, so i have to immediately pull over, turn my car off, then turn it back on and it goes away.. Until im moving and i stop again.

The check engine light is on for the idle air control valve, I have replaced it and the light is back on. Can anyone tell me what this could possibly be?

Re: Idle/Throttle Body Problem

Is the light for the same thing or a different problem? So is the car bogging? will it stall if you dont shut it off? What car do you have? What is happening when you take off and why do you think it is the throttle body..just trying to get a better picture of what is happening..

Re: Idle/Throttle Body Problem

2000 honda civic si. Light is for IAC valve. The car does not bog, or stall out. I have not taken off the throttle body yet, and im not sure if thats what is making it hard to drive, im just taking a guess.

Once ive stopped at a light for about a minute, i notice a change in idle (rpms move to 2grand). then when i hit the gas it makes a weird stuttering sound, and once i pull away, (this is hard to explain so bare with me) hitting the pedal causes the sputtering to happen while im driving, making it a rough ride. Its almost jerking the car back and forth when you hit the throttle, then let off.

This is when i have to pull over and shut my car off, turn it back on, and it drives away just fine... Until i have to sit at another stop light.....

Re: Idle/Throttle Body Problem

Is everything on your IACV connected properly? I hate to ask but is there a chance to get a video of the issue?? It only bogs down when you step on the gas right? could it be a fuel deliver problem..hard to say atm..i will get back to you...

Re: Idle/Throttle Body Problem

Yep everything should be connected right. Only 2 hoses and a plug.I am at work until 5 today. I will take a video when i leave. I will post it tonight. And yes its only when i hit the gas, its not so much a "bog down", it more like a sputter, it makes the rpms move up and down fast, ONLY when i hit the gas though. Youll see in the vid later.

Thanks for the help! This has really been bugging me!

Re: Idle/Throttle Body Problem

Have you cleaned the throttle body..try cleaning it out..there is a spray you can use to clean it...

Could be the throttle position sensor maybe..(not positive)

Re: Idle/Throttle Body Problem

I have not tried cleaning it yet. I will do that ASAP and let you know.

I heard that getting to the TPS is nearly impossible to get to unless you replace the whole throttle body. Is this true?

Re: Idle/Throttle Body Problem

it can be replaced without taking the throttle body off. It is located on the side of the throttle body and has a 3 pin connector.

Re: Idle/Throttle Body Problem

After taking a closer look at the TPS, i realized that it is actually cracked, causing a vacuum leak. We also tested it on the computer and it would only read a .89 w/ the throttle all the way open, indicating a problem. Got a new TPS, installing it tomorrow. Hopefully it does the trick.

Thanks for the help!

Re: Idle/Throttle Body Problem

Problem Solved! Runs and idles great. It was a combination of the TPS vacuum leak, and the IACV. Thanks for the help!

Re: Idle/Throttle Body Problem

Hey man what is the TPS voltage at closed throttle and wide open throttle on your si? im having the same dang problem after upgrading to a 70mm throttle body and port matching my intake manifold. idk if im getting a vaccum leak or what, it very frustrating. the throttle body is skunk2 brand if that helps at all. intake manifold is stoke and just port matched on the TB side. if anybody has any ideas on how to solve the bogging of my car and my crazy idle it ranges from 700rpm to 1500rpm. itll go down to 1500rpm once i step on my clutch then after a few seconds drop to a normal idle speed, its very annoying. it is throwing the same check engine light yours was and i went thru and cleaned my IAVC and still no luck. so maybe a vaccum leak? let me know if you guys have any ideas.

Thanks, Alex
