Question 99 Civic EX 4 Door - Acceleration problem/ Rough Idle

Hey guys, I'm new to the forum. I'd appreciate some help diagnosing an intermittent acceleration problem I've been having along with a rough idle that's been happening for awhile on my 99 civic EX sedan (automatic). The car has about 105,000 miles on it btw.

I'll start the car up and take it about half a block to a block then suddenly my engine will decelerate. To remedy the issue I'll have to let my foot up off the gas then back on to get it back up to speed. This only happens after taking the car out on the road after it's sat overnight or for a few hours. I've had my TPS sensor replaced thinking it was the issue but the problem persisted.

I've also had a rough idle when I'm sitting at a light with it in drive, nothing violent but enough for one to notice. It gets worse when I throw it in reverse but smooths out if I hit my door locks.

My brother who's a mechanic recommended I change out my Idle Air Control Valve which costs over $200. But I'd like to get a second opinion on the issue before I throw more money at it.

Thanks in advance.

IACV usually is the remedy for a rough idle. If it's not making the car unsafe to drive and if it's not killing your gas mileage, I would just save my money and not bother fixing it at all. But your money so ultimately it's up to you. If you want it fixed, IACV is your best bet. Just to be sure have your brother check for vacuum leaks, as even a small one can cause an unsettling idle.

Thanks Zeferint!

I've read that I should try cleaning my IACV first before shelling out for a new one.

It could also be a vacuume leak as well, my bro said he heard some hissing recently when he last worked on the car

I agree with all the info stated and remedies offered, but heres a replacement cheaper:

The sensor bolts onto the little housing that the vavle is in, you may be able to just replace the sensor.

So after removing and thoroughly cleaning my IACV, my idle has improved. It's not perfect but I do need to get around to changing out my plugs, wires, cap & rotor. Thanks for all the help!
