Unhappy Do i need a Alternator?

Hello Wise CivicForum.com sages, Noob here need some help.

Today My car would not start up. I turned the key to hear my starter give a weak attempt at starting. Do it a few times until the battery was drained and got a check engine light...

[Few choice words later]
Find my neighbor Convince him to give me a jump. hook the cables and such. turn key, engine starts right up with a vigorous Vroom! I hope out and thank my neighbor, Disconnect the cables thrown them in back and to my dismay engine has stopped.

From what i understand this is a Alternator problem. Do you agree wise forum sages? Should I R&R it? Are there any good Tutorials for a Gen6 Alternator R&R. I am cool with changing break pads the alternator seems difficult...

Thanks, Xiuix

Re: Do i need a Alternator?

is the battery light on next to the gauges? you can always get a free charging system test at most auto stores. could just be a dying old battery. if there is no battery light, then the alt is prolly fine and its a bad battery.

Re: Do i need a Alternator?

I get a battery light and after a while of draining the battery attempting to start the car i get a check engine light too. also my cabin lights are dim will turn on.

My battery is old(5ish years) and abused from my sound system.

Re: Do i need a Alternator?

Thank you everyone for your suggestions and posts. Here is an update so far

So I took the Battery to the local auto store and had the battery tested. Turns out it was not holding a charge. So I bought a new battery.

I installed it into my car. turned the key and it started. Although it started rumbling in a strange sort of way that i could feel in the shift ****. after a few minutes that went away.

So i decided to test the alternator. I unplugged the negative terminal of the battery while the car was running. to my shock it still ran. I reconnected the battery and took the car for a spin...

While driving when i came to a stop/Put the clutch in. the RPM's on the tachometer would drop to Zero and My car would stall. If i kept bumping the gas to keep it above 100-ish RPM's the car would stay running if i stop bumping the gas the car would stall each and every time.

PS this happened before where the car was stalling when putting the cluthin/stopping. I shut off the car and let it sit for an hour or so and the problem went away for months until now.

although when i parked my car at my house (with a slight incline) the car will stay running at idle with out any gas the throttle.

Re: Do i need a Alternator?

you prolly need to do the tuneup stuff in the forgotten diys thread like clean the idle air valve and do the ecu learn. did you have the alternator tested too? if not, that new battery will be messed up quick.

Re: Do i need a Alternator?

The ecu learn seemed to do the trick. My Honda is running smoother than it ever has before. I still need to check the voltage off the alt. I am going to borrow a buddies mulitimerer. Also going to clean out the idle air valve. I think the air filter could use a cleaning too.

Re: Do i need a Alternator?

make sure you have it tested at the auto parts store with the real computer tester. thats the only way to figure out how many amps the alt is putting out or if it has other problems. a bad alt can still put out 14v when measured at the battery with a voltmeter.

Re: Do i need a Alternator?

I have a similar problem, 2000 civic. Started recently, as I'm driving the power flickers, the lights brighten and dim, the radio comes and goes, even when I'm giving it gas, the car jerks. At one point the radio completely turned off. Hard time starting the car, so I got a new battery, and it started perfect. A few days later, the same problem is resurfacing...alternator ?? help

Re: Do i need a Alternator?

have it tested free at the auto store. sounds like alternator tho. and check your battery voltage. if its lower than around 12.5v you have a problem. and the new battery will need replacing once you fix the alternator if you drained it too low.
