O2 sensor welded inside dead exhaust pipe
O2 sensor welded inside dead exhaust pipe
I have a 1999 Honda Civic Ex—bought it in Nov. 2010. My question is if I have to get my intermediate exhaust pipe replaced because of holes in it and the oxygen sensor had been welded inside of the exhaust pipe, do I have to get a new oxygen sensor and have it threaded into the pipe? Is $600 fair? Should I not get work done? A little history follows.
I brought my car to mechanic a week ago because of noise near my tailpipe. He said it was the baffle in my muffler and would never go away. Harmless. Then 5 days later my exhaust was really loud and I stopped at a chain muffler place to take a quick look. They said holes in the center exhaust pipe. I brought my car back to my mechanic and he said $200 to replace exhaust pipe and $410 to thread oxygen sensor, which was welded inside the exhaust pipe. He said it was the worse welding/cutting/sleeving exhaust job he had seen in his life. Catalytic converter new but really bad patch job. Muffler new too. Don’t know why he didn’t notice all this patching and welding the last two times the car was in his garage for the baffle noise and two months before that because gears sticking between Park and Reverse (he said let that go--too expensive). Is this new/old car worth fixing with bad patch jobs and sticking gears?

Re: O2 sensor welded inside dead exhaust pipe
um, exhaust work is cheap. to just have a section of pipe replaced would barely cost $100 for the labor if that. a new 02 sensor is maybe $50 for the part and installing it should be free. i would not pay more than $200 for the whole job. depending on the pipe, you could buy it from honda and install yourself (bolt-on, no welding) and the oxygen sensor will have a hole already threaded.
